THE DEFINITION
Airsoft guns are the full or partial (4/5, 1/2, 1/3 etc) scale replicas of real guns.
Famous brands such as Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Desert Eagle and Beretta to name a few. These models shoot 6 mm plastic BB's in a variety of weights (0.12 g, 0.20 g, 0.23 g, 0.25 g, and upwards) and are intended for plinking, target shooting, skirmishing and general fun-gunning.
THE EXPLANATION
The design of an airsoft gun centers on a unique propulsion system utilizing a small amount of air to accurately shoot lightweight plastic BB pellets. This design philosophy resulted in an air gun which generates a much less damaging projectile that is still accurate enough to be FUN!
Types Available
There are several major categories of airsoft gun available.
These differences arise from:
1) the method of BB propulsion - Spring, Gas or Electric
2) the function - Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Sub-Machine, Mini Electric etc.
3) firing mechanism - Manual (spring), Semi-Auto, Fully-Auto
4) original licensed brand name - Beretta, Desert Eagle, Tanfoglio etc.
5) manufacturer of the airsoft product - SoftAir USA, Tokyo Marui etc.
Spin Up
Some airsoft guns also employ the Spin-Up (or Hop-Up) system. The basic theory of Spin-Up is spin ballistics. When the airsoft gun is fired, friction is applied to the upper side of BB pellet, which causes it to spin upwards. The power of this spin is utilized to offset the effects that gravity, wind power and air friction have on the BB pellet trajectory and allows it to travel a greater distance with a much straighter flight pattern.
